Grant Blake LARKIN September 18, 1925 - April 1, 2013





Grant Larkin passed away on April 1, 2013 at Delta Hospital at the age of 87 of natural causes. He was predeceased by his first wife of 43 years Paddy, and his second wife of 13 years Lois Jacqueline, and is survived by his sister Doris Kavanagh (Pat), daughter Kathleen (Bill), son Bruce (Kris) and their children Ashley (14) and Connor (10). 

Grant was born in Saskatoon and moved to Vancouver in his high school years with his parents Charlie and Eva. He attended Lord Byng high school and went on to UBC where he graduated with a B.Sc. Dairy Science. He started his career with Arctic Dairy which then became Dairyland. Grant was the plant
manager for most of his tenure and was instrumental in designing and building
the Dairyland plant on Louheed Hwy in Burnaby. He loved his job and retired after 39 years at the age of 60. 
Grant led a full and active life. He played rugby for the Vancouver Rowing Club and then the Evergreen's over 40 Club where he was  President for many years and organized several international tournaments. He
loved to play tennis and squash at the Arbutus Club and was one of the original
 members. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and golf. Grant served in the
militia with the B.C. Regiment and was Lt. Colonel and Commanding Officer in the early 70's. Grant spent most of his life with his family living in Kerrisdale on Cypress St. where he had many friends and neighbours. 

There will be a celebration of Grant's life on Wed. April 17 from 2-4 at the Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club, 1630 W. 15th Ave.
Vancouver.

Bruce Elliott (Scotty) McIntosh August 11, 1930 - March 21, 2013 





Bruce passed away at Surrey Memorial Hospital on March 21, 2013 with his family
at his side. Bruce was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and moved to Vancouver at
the age of eight years. He attended King George High School and Vancouver
Tech.
Bruce enjoyed coaching hockey and ball hockey and playing Rugby with the Meralomas, Twilighters and Evergreens Rugby Clubs. He toured several European Countries and Japan with the teams.
In 1959 Bruce went to work for Columbia Engineering Ltd. as project supervisor and was involved in the design of special equipment for the particleboard industry. plant design, process development and superivision of the installation of particleboard plants in Venezuela, New Zealand and several plants in Canada and the U.S.A. He held the position of Vice President and later Director of Columbia Engineering International Ltd. 
Bruce will be greatly missed by Valerie, his wife of 53 years,  his son Dean, his daughter Kim (Nigel) son Darryl (Brigitte) his loving
grandchildren Ryan, Colin, Michele, Rachel, and Nicole. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice.

The team consists of WAK WAK, FUWAKU, GIFUWAK and WAKSEN, featuring two teams. One team of over 70's team (with over 21 players in the visiting party) and an  over 60's team (with 20 players in the visiting party).

This coming May is going to be very busy but very good for the club so I want to give all of you fair notice of the events to come.
Apart from the regular season games and the final game of the league season with the Legends on May 5th, we have the following:
1.      Sunday, May 12th – visiting Japanese team Wak Sun will be playing over 60’s and over 70’s on the day. This has been thrown open to the league in an effort to attract enough older rugby players to put together both games in some form. It will also be a full day of entertainment, eating and re-connecting with good Japanese friends.
2.      May 22nd – 25th – St Louis Rich (Rich Etzkorn) is planning on bringing up two teams of players for their 80th club celebration. Both a young competitive side and a Masters side. Now we would likely play on the Thursday, 23rd against Rich’s Old Boys team and I will look to organise a young buck’s game against maybe the Rowers, depending on come aspirations etc. at that time of the year. They will probably combine with us for the May 25th Legends 40th celebration World International festival of Rugby.
3.      Saturday, May 25th – Legends 40th anniversary and a World International Festival of Rugby.

]]>Wed, 20 Feb 2013 20:39:40 GMThttps://www.evergreensrugbyvancouver.com/evergreens-message-board/re-the-passing-of-niall-sweeney-_evergreen-ripI too was saddened to see the posting re Sweeney.  When I started golfing some dozen years ago Niall was one of the players who was active and was very supportive to a new hacker in the group.  He was a very nice man, a gentleman, with a great sense of humor.  Always with helpful and uplifting with comments on a golf swing, but only if asked.   I particularly enjoyed his MC'ing of our dinners where various prizes were awarded with a running commentary from Niall, all of it funny and some of it of course rude.

I joined the Evergreens in the Fall of 1973 and toured with them to Japan in 1974,78 and again in 1982 When I joined the Club was known as the OldStylers and later the Whoi-Whois. Bad knees and an aging body resulted in my rugby retirement in 1982.
I worked in the BC Corrections Branch (Probation) for 34 years retiring to Roberts Creek in 1988.
I have wonderful memories of my time with the Evergreens and well remember Graham, John Smith, Tom Taylor, Rolie, Gary Fumano , Jack Ford and many others.
Reading Neil Sweeny's obituary brought back great memories of my time with the Evergreens.
A neighbour and friend of mine (Vern Loffstrom --also an Evergreen) meet regularly and perhaps one day we can come in to one of your Social Events or even to watch a game. I won't bring along my togs as my aging body and advancing years wouldn't permit that.
