The end of winter season (last match) against Snowcaps at Brockton, on Sunday, December 11th at 1PM provided sun at times with cool and clear weather after a cold and rainy week. You could say the weather conditions were pitch perfect and in true Brockton fashion the field was peppered with goose droppings and fall foliage. A beautiful setting for Rugby! The Evergreens Rugby Club would like to thank the Scribes, SOBs and Vancouver Rowing Clubs for coming out to help make this day a great rugby Sunday. With enough sharing of players, the Snowcaps kick-off with mix of players from both sides creating the two teams of 15 players match with spares!!!! Respect to the Referee Tyler Dawson for being able to control the bunch of miscreants on the field. The highlights of the game include the Snowcap player call for the ball to receive a beautiful pass (from Evergreens) from behind the Evergreens back line for a try and we saw a few red shorts making their moves!!!!! Welcome back to Sonny and his first game match in 2022 and Ian Anderson returning to play after a 9-year retirement! Well done to everyone that played. No injuries to report. The Final Score –Snowcaps won😊 Let's get ready for the next game! The Ebb Tide Rugby Club is coming to Brockton Pavilion at Stanley Park Vancouver on Sunday, February 26, 2023. __________ The Club silently took time today to honour, reflect, and remember Greg Gilding of the Twilighter Rugby Club.

The Evergreens game against the SOBS on November 27th at Sullivan Heights Park proved to be a perfect day for rugby (cold, windy and sunny). The Evergreens turned up to the match with 10 players that dressed in time for kick-off at 2PM, shortly after a few Scribes players showed up to aid the Evergreens in putting on a full 15 side. All the while, the SOBS put out an army of players which included eight Abbotsford/Chilliwack players making there total of more than 23. The game which included full push scrums and 15 min. quarters (4 total) started out at a fast pace, with the ball being thrown all across the pitch by both sides. All wingers were involved from the opening kick-off. The Evergreens had control of the SOBS for the first 8 minutes of the game and then errant passes along with missed tackles came into the game. The SOBS scored first, followed by two more before the end of the first 15 min. Missed tackles and strayed passes contributed to the scoring by the SOBS. At the second 15 min., the Evergreens improved on tackling, but passes continued to effect the game. Finally with the full push scrums the Evergreens forwards pushed a set scrum over the line for the first try of the game for the good guys! The third 15 min., proved to be a very productive time for the SOBS as the ugly headed missed tackles came into play again and the SOBS took advantage scoring multiple times in the third quarter. Alas Ken (Rhino) Thomas had a break through at the SOBS line and was able to dump the ball off to a flying Brett Hay who went into score the second try of the game for the Evergreens. The 4th quarter was a lot of the same. (Actually, I am assuming as you will see by the injury report I left the field to take care of an wrist injury taking me out of action for 2-3 weeks). Thanks to the Scribes (Marcus Tracy and Friends) and SOBS (Ritchie Eachert and friends) that came over to aid the Evergreens on putting a full side on the pitch at kick-off. Injury report
Overall, the game against the SOB's was a learning experience for all players. The overall score at the end of the day does not matter (and it was a lot to a little) as long as all players who strapped on the boots had a good time and enjoyed being on a open field pitch with the smell of grass and dirt on their jerseys. Our next game we will host the Snowcaps. The day was best summed up by Nick (the Snowcaps Captain) as “A perfect day for rugby….COLD, WET and MISERABLE”. Yes, it was all of the above which made it even better for those smart enough to know…….. it’s still the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon!! The Snowcaps ran out winners with a scoreline of 5 tries to our 1. Our try coming from Brian (Houle), who found himself in the right place at the right time – standing (yes, standing) on the goalline (yes, goalline), being handed the ball (yes, handed) and touching the post. Wow, how does he do it? Overall it was an excellent game of rugby. We didn’t have a full team, so we had to borrow a few players from the ‘Caps. Not a nice thing to admit for a home game. Come on fellow Evergreens, we need better numbers, at the very least for home games!! The final score does not reflect that the Evergreens had most of the possession but we could not make the final breakthrough and were caught by the ‘Caps breakaways. Thanks to Dave and the Rev from Legends for showing. Zak as you’re now a regular, we’ll just have to stop singling you out for praise and start dumping on you just like the rest of the guys. Kudos to Blair and try scorer Brian for making it over from the Sunshine Coast. JR we miss ya – IT’S PRETTY QUIET WITHOUT YOU!! Bill put on quite the amazing post-game meal. Roast beef no less!! There was a terrific buzz in the clubhouse and we had more visitors show up to celebrate Jack Stokes 60th birthday. A full house no less! Jack won Man of the Match nomination from the Evergreens and Man of the Match nomination from the Snowcaps (FIX!!!). Well, he did actually play for both sides during the game. As is customary, he had to compete in a Boat Race…..this time with himself!! Double fisting appears to come naturally to him and he managed quite well to simultaneously pound back two beers. Well done Jack and a Happy 60th Birthday from all!! By the way, congratulations also to our newest Evergreen, Sonny. He welcomed a bouncing baby daughter into the world just last week. Yes, he was looking a little red-eyed on Sunday!! Congratulations to you and your family from all of us!! This week-end coming up we are combining with the Legends at Connaught Park playing the Abbotsford Originals. So come on out players and let’s have some more fun in the muck!! |
