The origins of the Evergreens RFC date back to the spring of 1972 when the first Old-stylers Rugby Club was formed to play against the touring Wak Wak, organized in 1948 as an over 40 rugby club from Osaka, Japan.
What started as a “pick-up” team to accommodate a touring team \evolved into a very active and dynamic group of rugby enthusiasts, still eager to play themselves, but committed to supporting the grass roots growth and development of the game. For many years, the Evergreens organized and sponsored the annual Rugby Cup for fifteen and seven aside tournaments and the originators and driving force behind the refurbishing of the Brockton Clubhouse in 1984. Our membership comes from everywhere comprising of players and rugby followers from ALL the local and international clubs. Today, the club plays a full schedule of games from September to May during the "winter" rugby season with over 35+ and at times an excellent over 60 team to take the field. Every two or three years the team make a trips abroad to play rugby and try new types of sake and beer.
Our club tours have consisted of trips to Japan 2002, Chile/Argentina 2004, Argentina/Uruguay 2006, New Zealand 2009 and 2011, Catalina Island 2011, Thailand 2014, Argentina / Uruguay in 2018, Portugal / Spain in 2022, and Alaska 2023. The Evergreens celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2002 with the highlight being a very successful tour of Japan and the 50th anniversary in 2022 with a commitment to the founding members as a touring club and tour in Portugal and Spain. The history continues......with a tour planned for Japan in 2024.
Honouring the history of the Evergreens: Graham Budge, Grant Larkin, Roly Witt, Norman Jack, Gary Fumano, John Podmore, Doug Dersch, George Sim, Brett Hay, Mark Ward, Barry Magrill and the incumbent Joel Peterson serving as presidents of the club.

Japan TOUR POSTPONED TO 2025

Ladies and gentleman, rugby enthusiasts, and sake aficionados, we regret to inform you that the much-anticipated 2024 tour has been postponed to 2025. But feat not! We turned this setback into an opportunity for players to top-up their tour funds with three games planned from Osaka to Tokyo.
Many people have already expressed interest in this tour due to its location and its historical significance to the Evergreens RFC. In case you have forgotten, the Evergreen club was raised as a direct result of the Japanese touring to us and we and them have reciprocated over the years. It has been a while since we have toured there and it is an overdue visit for us.
That being said, the importance of this tour cannot be overstated. The Evergreens is pleased to announce that Mark Ward has agreed to take up the role of tour master. An e-mail with more information and a better understanding of the tour will be forthcoming from him in due course. As well, George Sim has joined the tour committee and will be travelling to meet the clubs in Japan to solidify dates and places. Joining Mark and George to round out the committee are two Evergreens with experience in Japan is Duncan Porter and Eugene Soga.
Here are the basics as they stand right now: We will tour for roughly two weeks in October. We will likely play three games versus the Wak Wak, the Fuwaku, and the Gentlemen of Osaka. There will be cultural and social events unique to Japan and there will be much sake drunk! We want to ensure playing sides of an over-50 and an over-60 team, so priority to playing tourists is a given. Non-playing tourists will be considered as the teams are filled. More information to come as available.
And remember, life is like rugby: sometimes you score tries, sometimes you get tackled by reality. But as the ancient Japanese proverb says, "When the game is canceled, find the nearest sake bar."
