Captains Report from (Snowcaps) Nick Broad Esq.
Evergreens/Legends V Snowcaps November 18th 2012
It was an even darker and stormier afternoon than usual as
the Legends ( In their own mind ) descended on a Fortress that has not been
over run by heathen hordes all year. Not able to play due to international
obligations, have you seen that French porn?, I assumed the role of Coach, much
to the astonishment of anyone that has played alongside me ,but the cleaning
lady had gone for the day. I don't think everyone was convinced when I
suggested we start with a 4-4-2 formation with Walshy in goal.
We only
had 15 players but they only had a couple of spares themselves which made for a
great competitive game in wet, horrible ,nasty conditions, perfect for a game
of rugby . Wingers may disagree but quite frankly who's listening? We decided
to go with a completely new strategy, I was amazed to discover, we had never
thought to use before. In a winner take all move, we decided to chance our arm
by playing Big Jim Mossop and Mike the Greek without hangovers and completely
sober. This tactic may revolutionize Old Boys rugby but these two lads were
unstoppable and played a big part in a famous victory that reverberated around
the rugby world at least as far as Horseshoe Bay and Deep Cove.
Kudos to
Kevin, our new lad who made his debut playing in the front row with another
Dave, who was awesome, and Craig Griffiths. Kevin showed all the signs of a
star in the making and performed well despite this being only his second game
in 23 years. I was glad he passed our very strict last minute fitness test
whereby a player must be able to support his own body weight when walking on to
the field. John Keller and Walshy played second row with Big Jim, Byron and
Al forming the Back Row. All the forwards put in a monumental shift tackling
like Trojans and crashing into their sizeable players with ball in hand,( makes
more sense than between your knees.)
Reid played brilliantly at scrum
half and he linked up well with Andrew who gave Mike great service with some
great passing. Brian Buck and Shane Cable took turns at outside Centre and
with Mike at inside, Jim H. on one wing, and of course Dougie of The McGregors
at Fullback and all the backs put in a great display with heroic last ditch
tackling and some enterprising attacking play.
Our first try was scored
by Byron who capitalized on a good run by Mike and finished with typical
springbok tenacity and flair. Jim " Dance floor " Mossop played arguably his
best game of the season scoring 2 tries and setting up two. If we can keep him
away from Irish car bombs he could write his own cheque at the end of the
season and I mean that quite literally. Our second try was a move where Doug
passed to Jim, he ploughed through half of their defence and returned the
favour to Doug, who is virtually unstoppable from 20 yards (he say's 25 yards
and he may be right.) The next two tries were pure unadulterated Mossop magic.
One was his usual weaving run where he confuses both sets of players and before
either side has figured out what the fook he is doing he is already saluting to
his adoring fans who have travelled from all over upper Lonsdale to see the
game. His second try was a solo run from a quick tap penalty and the try was
never in doubt. Our last try was a candidate for try of the season, with Big
Jim, who feckin' else, someone please give him" an Irish car bomb," who
ruthlessly fended off Irish Tommy passed to Craig ,with the all too Welsh
family name, who stormed up the field , timing his pass to deadly Doug with
Swiss like precision . The Legends scored a couple but there were only 2
winners, the Snowcaps, rugby and the fans. Mossop may have stolen the newspaper
headlines around the world but this victory was a team effort and was about
everyone putting their bodies on the line. I always enjoy watching Craig G. and
John K. on the same team as they play great together and Slipper of the yard
would probably keep me out of the first 15 at open side flanker if I wasn't
president ,and who says power doesn't corrupt. Mike of Macedonia seems to have
captured his old form and Brian Bucks and Shane did not look out of place in an
all star team. Kudos to Jim Harrison who never misses a game, if he is in town,
and never shirks a tackle and someone whose astute defensive play kept the
Legends off the score sheet in the first few minutes.
Hats off to
Andrew and Narins who have travelled from Seattle almost every week which is
generally a 7 hour round trip unless we are playing in Nanaimo and then it is
11 hours, that is what you call commitment. Thanks to Heather who took over the
bottle draw ,and even bigger thanks to Reid who left ,forgetting the bottle of
Captain Morgan he had won. Jim was chosen as man of the match and to nobody's
surprise , but their previously unbeaten Captain, downed his beer before their
man had taken his first swallow .Birmingham Darren was last seen on Friday
night with Man of the Moment Big Jim Mossop down Mosquito Creek, exposing his
breasts to adoring women who must have thought they had died and gone to
heaven. Personally I thought he looked better before the implants and his wife
did confide in me that one would have sufficed. Anyway Darren did not play
because he had left his rugby kit in his car and subsequently he had lost his
car keys. Well that's right up there with " The dog ate my homework "or the
wife coming home to seeing you in a 69 position with a girl of easy virtue and
you saying" It's not what it looks Like". Still we can save it for the
Christmas party. All in all the Snowcaps have had a tremendous first half of
the season, unbeaten at the Fortress, the new lads have fitted in well and
Sergio should be congratulated for recruiting more players than anyone
else.
It would be great to see anyone who has ever played Snowcap
rugby, or knows someone who has, at our in-house Christmas party but I would
like to think you are coming more for the camaraderie than the strippers Snowy
has recruited. God bless , good night from him and good night from me.
